During Antwerp Art Weekend, we are proud to present a very special solo exhibition by Amsterdam-based artist Jitske Schols, titled CHANGING STATES.
Schols' work is dedicated to telling ‘HERstories’—stories of women that have been forgotten or left untold—restoring them to our collective memory. Her practice offers a powerful counterbalance to the dominant male-centered narratives found in traditional ‘HIStory’. With a deeply intersectional lens, she explores how race, class, gender, and other identities have shaped these women’s lives and legacies.
Known for her long-term, research-driven projects, Schols delves into the complex identities of her subjects, uncovering the many layers that inform her evocative series of paintings. These works give voice to women whose stories have long been silent.
For her solo exhibition in Antwerp, Schols drew inspiration from the extraordinary yet little-known life of Elli Kruithof—an accomplished interior designer who later became a theologian. Some may recognise the name, as Elli was the sister of renowned philosopher Jaap Kruithof. Yet, very few people actually know Elli Kruithof. Could it be her radical career change after her split from her architect husband Raymond Goovaerts? Or was it the values instilled in her by her devout Protestant parents? You might or you might not discover the answers to these questions, but you will certainly get to know Elli a bit better through Jitske Schols’ artworks.
Schols’ paintings are not literal depictions of the past, but rather interpretations infused with her own memories, emotions, and experiences.
'These women are not muses, but mentors.
Every painting is a conversation with them' - Jitske Schols
