( s o o n )’s new art season starts with the solo show by Ellen Vrijsen titled REMINDERS.

The title hints at Ellen’s affinity with nostalgia, though this is tempered by a fundamental and exuberant enthusiasm. This duality runs through her work. Trained as an illustrator, she never imagined becoming an abstract painter, yet traces of the pictorial remain. It forms a continuous play of opposite forces. Over time, backgrounds have moved into the foreground, offering a more eloquent translation of her memories and emotions through colours, shapes and textures. 
Additionally symbolism plays a vital role, resonating as an echo of a lived experience or emotion. Her practice is at once an ode to cherished, sometimes lost, moments of the past and a gesture towards hope for the future.
